Second STEM Day at Progressive Field Inspired the Next Generation of Innovators
What do a perfectly executed fastball, the grip on a baseball bat, and a future career in data analytics have in common?
They all took center stage at Progressive Field!
Thousands of students from across Northeast Ohio flooded the stadium for an unforgettable STEM Day on May 13. Organized by NEOSTEM in partnership with the Cleveland Guardians and STEM Playbook, dozens of local businesses, academic institutions, and community organizations set up interactive "try-it" stations. Students participated in 2-to-5-minute mini-builds, quick-fire science experiments, and engineering challenges.
STEM Playbook Stole the Show with an On-Field Masterclass
The absolute highlight of the day took place right on the grass. STEM Playbook hosted an exclusive on-field interview with real STEM professionals working for the Guardians. The STEM Day interlude beautifully bridged the gap between the physics of play and future career pathways.
"We want students to realize that they don't just have to be the fans or the players of the future,” said Jessie Dann, STEM Playbook’s director of implementation.“They can be the engineers, statisticians, and sports scientists who shape the game."
Outside of hearing from professionals in the field, students were trying their luck at being materials engineers on the concourse. Through a hands-on activity hosted by STEM Playbook, they tested how different bat grip textures affect friction and swing velocity, directly connecting the physics of equipment design to future careers in materials science and biomechanical engineering.
Instead of sitting in a traditional classroom, youth stepped into the shoes of sports scientists, materials engineers, and data analysts. As students left the stadium, they did so with a new perspective on the diamond, realizing that whether they are analyzing player data, engineering safer gear, or calculating launch angles, their own future in STEM is a guaranteed home run.
